Sheffield Socials
What is Sheffield Socials?
You may or may not have seen us on that there Twitter (@SheffSocials), Instagram (@SheffieldSocials) or on The r/SheffieldSocials subReddit but not quite known who we are or what and why we are doing what we are doing. In short, we are not completely sure ourselves, yet. Sheffield Socials was set up by The Elf from @HelpSheffield with the initial aim of just bringing people together, to make friends, to visit some of the many great venues in Sheffield and to see how it goes.
How does it work?
We have been operating the monthly meetups for over 4 years and try to host them at new venues each time (Only two exceptions so far because 2 businesses changed hands and names but kept the same venue). Our meetups are open to anyone over the age of 18 (they have all been held in pubs so far). There is no remit, no selling (although if you choose to talk business that's perfectly fine) and (gaming cafe aside) there are no planned activities. Just turn up, say "hi", drink (or not - many don't) and see where the night takes you. Anyone who does attend can choose to join our WhatsApp group which has people organising other ad-hoc meetups and an, almost, weekly trip to The Head of Steam for the Wednesday evening quiz night. We try not to go more than 2 miles from the centre of Sheffield.
Who turns up?
We always have a varied group of people attending the meetups, with a good spread across many demographics with ages ranging from 20 or so to approximately 70 (we don't ask). Everyone is incredibly friendly, welcoming and we always have good fun whilst aiming to ensure that no one feels left out. If you don't think this is for you or people like you, we'd suggest turning up and finding out. .
I'm a bit nervous, should I be?
No. Almost everyone has joined us with at least a smidgeon of anxiety and not knowing what to expect but all the feedback we get suggests that people got along with our meetups just fine. Usual group dynamics occur, we definitely have a few outgoing regulars but they only want to make sure people feel welcome and included, but if that's not you then just taking in the atmosphere is perfectly fine. Numerous attendees have mentioned that the meetups have been much more relaxed than they feared they would be.
How do I get involved?
Our next meetup in on Thursday the 23rd of April from 6.30pm (don't worry about being on time, many regulars miss the first 2 hours but still come along) at Cheap Dates in Orchard Square, S1.. You can get tickets here
https://www.trybooking.com/uk/GGCV
We have a capacity of, up to, 100 attendees and have so far had 34 tickets signed up for the event. The tickets are not vital, they are simply to give us some, vague, idea as to how many people might turn up.
Follow our social media platforms(see above) for updates of future events.
